Description

This I created from the pattern at Ann's Cross Stitch Patterns.

He's very cute and heading to a good friend of mine.

UPDATE FOR StitchingPirates "Pirate Pride Contest" Fall 2013

So,.... I think this one is my favorite so far. He was the first large project I undertook when I started stitching again.

I learned a lot working with this fellow. He has several mistakes, especially around the eyes. Several times I was too eager and stitched farther than I should have, leaping gaps, I quickly learned that a more conservative approach of "If it isn't connected to something already stitched, don't stitch it." works best for me. It cuts down on areas where I have to be creative to get the pieces to match.

The original pattern www.cross-stitch-pattern.net/D… has 25 colors. I know I merged several of the closer shades because I was having a VERY hard time telling them apart and keeping up with where I should be. I"m not sure exactly which colors were merged, but my current chart for him has only 16 colors.

He is stitched on 14 count aida and as I've gotten better at stitching I wouldn't chose that size again, I much prefer 28 count. The aida is baby blue, which I thought fitting for his colors. I dealt with the normal frustrations of handling 14 count; it was stiff and hard to handle, but for a beginning stitcher it was easy to use and count stitches.

Also, the reason I chosen cloth as a "frame" was that he was being sent over-seas to his new home. I wasn't comfortable with sending glass in a frame. So,.... he also inspired me to drag out my sewing machine from the closet it had been languishing in since it was given to me as a high school graduation present.

I was taught to sew the basics by my mother as a child. I, however, found that sewing straight lines was "Booooorrring" and even though I watched my mother sew and did pay attention to her explaining things, I didn't practice very much. So..... you can see the result,.... my stitching is crooked and now I"m a bit frustrated that I let it go like that, but at the time I was super proud that I had managed that much.

I have also figured out that my seeming inability to stitch a straight line isn't all a lack of practice. I am astigmatic, it throws my vision off. I do wear glasses, but if I take them off my normally rectangular computer monitor appears as a trapezoid to me,..... narrow at the top and wide at the bottom. I discovered on my last sewing project that even with my glasses on.... if I try to look at the fabric in front of the pressure foot and then at the fabric behind the presser foot.... I don't see a straight line. I'm working on training myself to use a magnet on the machine, parallel to the foot, to guide my lines and NOT look behind the presser foot.

Currently,.....
I am planning to stitch this pattern again. I've stitched several things for other people in the last year and a half and it's time for me to stitch something for myself. I love this little guy, so I'll be tweaking his colors a bit so that he's a bit more green than blue and stitching him on 28 count.
